Octavo, 7.25 x 5.5", beige wrappers with black lettering, 122 pp, local advertisement pages at beginning of book. A community cookbook published to raise funds for Watts Hospital, founded in 1895 as the first hospital in the city of Durham, North Carolina. The book was published under the auspices of the Board of Lady Visitors of Watts Hospital. The introduction notes that "our idea has been not to give a finished cookery book with fancy dishes and menus, for the land is full of these, but to give only those recipes that are simple and have been tried by our ladies." The recipes are attributed and include okra soup, Louisiana gumbo, squirrel stew, union birds sauce, and Barbadoes Plum Cake, as well as six recipes for alcoholic drinks. Staining, spotting, and wear to covers, chipping to wrappers along spine, spotting to endpapers and text edges, foxing to pages, a couple of pages with pencil annotations, paper abrasion to upper margin of pp. 82-83 affecting a few letters.
