A Popular Life of Saint Patrick, Apostle and Patron of Ireland

A Popular Life Of Saint Patrick, Apostle And Patron Of Ireland by Michael Joseph O'Farrell. This is a 19th-century biographical and devotional history that narrates the life of Saint Patrick, the patron of Ireland, drawing on traditional Irish annals and hagiography. The book traces Ireland’s religious landscape before Patrick, recounts his birth, captivity, and mission, and follows his evangelistic campaigns across Meath, Ulster, Connaught, and Munster. It describes how Patrick founded churches (notably Armagh), interfaced with kings and Druids, and endured miracles and trials in the spread of Christianity. Structured as a popular life rather than a scholarly treatise, it blends legend with historical tradition, including accounts of Palladius, the mission to Ireland, synods, and the early Irish Church’s doctrine and sacraments. The work concludes with reflections on Patrick’s enduring legacy, the island’s Christian heritage, and the saint’s central role in shaping Irish faith and identity.
