This is a wonderfully illustrated, antique copy of "POPULAR RESORTS and How to Reach Them" - Containing a Brief Description of the Principal Summer Retreats in the United States and the Routes of Travel Leading to Them by John B. Bachelder. 1874 2nd edition revised (as stated on the front cover); John B. Bachelder; Boston. The book is profusely illustrated with a few in-text maps, and 100 woodcuts (many of which are full-page) by "the best engravers, many of them from original sketches by John B. Bachelder." The Contents are as follows: Camping Out; North Conway; Boston and Maine Railroad; Pennsylvania Scenery - Central Railroad of New Jersey; Cape May - West Jersey Railroad; Atlantic City, J.J. - Camden and Atlantic Railroad; Western Travel - Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad; Northern Central Railway; Boston, Concord, and Montreal Railroad; Pennsylvania Railroad; Excursion through Long Island Sound - Stonington Lake; Shelter Island, N.Y.; North Mountain House, Penn.; Excursion to Oak Bluffs. From the Preface: "Of all the celebrated watering-places on the coast, or frequented mountain-houses, no two are alike, yet each locality possesses an individual interest; and the routes which lead to them have their attractions, either in the safety and comforts afforded the Traveller, or in the picturesque beauty of the region through which they pass. It is to lay this plainly before the public that these pages are presented." Condition: Light soiling and staining to the covers; the back cover has a couple small stains at the bottom edge. Tiny cloth tears at the bottom 2 cover corner tips. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Consistent mild foxing to the pages throughout, though occasional random pages do have heavier foxing that cover much of the page. A small, light stain appears at the top of the pages at the beginning of the book, and then gets gradually smaller until it disappears about one-third of the way through. Overall the book is in Good condition.
