Published in 1836 by James Ridgway and Sons. Four volumes out of five. Internally very good with clean, unmarked pages. Beautiful hand painted map of the Caucasus Mountains and other interesting fold out plates are in excellent condition. Good binding and covers, with some cracking on the spine of Volume III. One quarter red leather covers and corners, with gold gilt lettering on the spines. Oriental Club book plate on inside cover and imprint on bottom of the spine. Some rubbing. These volumes consist of Russian state papers that were published by David Urquhart, who was serving as a diplomat for the United Kingdom in the court of the Ottoman Sultan. His outspoken anti-Russian and pro-Turkish politics eventually saw him recalled in 1837, shortly after the publication of these books. His work and writing helped establish the relationship between Britain and the Ottoman Empire, contributing to their alliance in the Crimean War in the 1850s. Seller Inventory # 1102100016
