About this Item

First Illustrated American Edition. Seven Illustrations by "Alfred Crowquill" (Alfred Henry Forrester), 12 by "Sam Weller, Jr." One title page by each. All engraved on steeel by J. Yeager. Pages 388 pp.8vo (6to.) Half Black Morocco with Greenish Gray Cloth Covered Boards. Ruled in Blind with Gilt RUles, Filets and Lettering on Spine. Binder's Blind Stamp on Front Free End Paper: "E. Walker & Sons / Book Binders / New York." First Illustrated American Edition. Wilkins, p.8. Gimbel A23. This is the first illustrated American work by Dickens, preceded only by the five volume unillustrated edition published by Carey, Lea and Blanchard hard on the publication of each cluster of four parts. Several of these five volumed preceded the English publication of "Pickwick" in bound form and Volume One, issued in only 1500 copies because of the unknown qualities of the author, is very scarce, indeed. No ads (perhaps removed by the binder). Foxing and browning, as expected. Edges of a few pages repaired and some plates backed. Else, Very Good. A remarkably good copy of a fragile and uncommon item.
