All the barnyard animals want the last potato, but crafty Goat means to have it all to himself.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- All of the animals want to eat the last potato on the plate in this slight picture book. Goat, who is both clever and greedy, manages to trick the others out of their share, but when he finally claims his prize it has already been eaten by a family of mice. Readers will recognize the manipulations of Goat, and will feel that justice has been served in the end. However, the book has few other satisfactions. The watercolor illustrations are lively, but do not embellish or enlarge on the tale. Goat wants the last, teeny-weeny potato. He politely asks if anyone minds if he takes it, and everyone does mind--everyone wants it. So Goat proposes a crafty series of barnyard stunts to eliminate the competitors one by one. Goose loses out because she can't stand on her head; Pig gets stuck puffing up the hayloft ladder; Sheep loses out for being slow. Goat wins every contest, of course. But as he goes for the potato, it's gone. Ten little mice have shared it while the big fellers competed and argued. Porter's illustrations will bring giggles, and the antics are brushed with a pastel warmth. Ages 4-7.
