Poverty Alleviation and Targeted Measures: Theory and Practice

This book examines China’s remarkable success in reducing poverty the largest and most significant effort of poverty alleviation in human history. It begins by outlining the background of poverty alleviation in China, systematically analyzing its organizational and policy frameworks, and detailing the implementation models and pathways of targeted poverty alleviation. Next, it addresses the challenges and practices associated with poverty alleviation in China, summarizing the experiences that illustrate not only significant achievements in poverty reduction but also far-reaching political, social, and international implications. Finally, at a pivotal moment in the CPC’s pursuit of its second centenary goal, the book connects poverty alleviation with rural revitalization, which is essential for the next phase of agricultural and rural development in China. It offers a forward-looking analysis of relative poverty alleviation and proposes specific strategies to address these challenges.

Sangui Wang is a professor and a doctoral tutor with the School of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Renmin University of China, director of the China Anti-Poverty Research Institute of the Renmin University of China, expert enjoying the special government allowances of the State Council, distinguished expert of the CPPCC National Committee Talent Pool, and consultant expert of Word Bank, UNDP, and other international organizations.

His main research area is poverty and rural development. He has led several major national social science projects. He has published 18 academic books on poverty and more than 180 academic papers. He was awarded the First Prize of the 8th Outstanding Achievement Award of Scientific Research in Universities and Colleges, the Fourth and Ninth China Rural Development Research Award, and the First “YouChange Poverty Alleviation Research Achievement Award” of the State Council Poverty Alleviation Office. He has been recognized by the State Council Leading Group for Poverty Alleviation in China as a model individual in poverty alleviation and development.
