About this title

Synopsis

Since its release, Power in the Helping Professions has been required reading for analysts, clergy, and teachers around the world. In this concise classic, Adolf Guggenbühl-Craig, a Swiss psychiatrist, author, and former head of the International Association of Jungians, teaches us how to be aware of the subtle abuses of authority that occur during therapy or counseling.

In a series of bold, trenchant chapters, which explore such topics as "Social Work and Inquisition" and "The Analyst and the Patient's Extra-Analytical Life", the author shows how therapists often abuse their power under the cover of good intentions and the desire to help. He then offers fresh, concrete advise on how social workers, analysts, teachers, and ministers can heighten their sensitivity so as to better cope with the power dilemmas that therapy often presents.
