Synopsis
This middle school mathematics and social studies curriculum integrates goals and strategies consistent with the NCTM Standards to help students create mathematical questions; conduct research, record, interpret, and discuss results; and learn about the uses and misuses of math in real world decision-making. It includes lesson plans and activities appropriate for heterogeneously grouped classes; suggestions for assessment; an appendix on cooperative-learning techniques; and a chart correlating the curriculum activities to NCTM Standards. Student handouts are also available for purchase through Educators for Social Responsibility.
About the Author
Rachel A. Poliner is an educational consultant, based in Boston, Massachusetts, focused on school reform dealing with personalization, social and emotional learning, management, change, and conflict. A former teacher, she has worked with public and independent schools in New England and across the United States. Her recent efforts include consulting on advisory programs and high school redesign; designing and implementing K-12 social and emotional learning reforms district-wide; shaping faculty culture; and integrating character development, conflict resolution, and service learning through all subject areas. While with ESR, Rachel was a faculty member of ESR/Lesley Universitys joint Masters degree program and developed the Stories Program: Conflict and Character through Literature and Language Arts. She has co-authored various ESR curricula, including Dialogue: Turning Controversy into Community; The Power of Numbers, an integrated mathematics and social studies curriculum; and Conflict Resolution in the Middle School Student Workbook and Journal.
