Some glass can be cleaned in situ, some without stripping the leads. It is important that the expectation of dramatic transformations of glass is not fostered. Most conservators will advocate the removal of harmful and damaging dirt and corrosion products, the increase of legibility by the removal of lead lines destroying designs, and the replacement of missing features using backing plates.
