1858. No Edition Remarks. 288 pages. Fully bound in leather; rebound using original leather and metal parts, buckle is missing. Gilded text block edges. Ex Libris plate to front pastedown. Moderate foxing and tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, lighter to pastedowns and free endpapers. Hinges are heavily cracked with netting exposed causing boards to be loose. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with noticeable rubbing, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier chipping, peeling and tanning with soft crushing to ends. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Reprint. Type: Z 942 (O.T.), 288 (N.T.) 55 (Psalms) pp. Bound in full black calf leather with a gilt embossed brown title block. Folio sized. No date. Circa 1870. 5 raised bands to the spine. The text supported by a number of colour maps. Marbled endpapers and the fore-edges marbled too. No inscriptions or inserts or anything else, which is a little unusual for a family Bible, but instead a clean text block so in better condition than most. The leather boards beautifully tooled with a motif in the shape of a cross to each board. A handsome Bible. Light or slight spotting to the endpapers - very scattered and very light elsewhere. Light or slight rubbing to the boards and a small area of rubbing to the leading edge of the rear board. The final few leaves slightly pulling at the head, but they still sit perfectly in the text block. Slight staining to the final text leaf and the opposite blank page. Plus [36] plates, steel engravings, maps and plans, some coloured, all with tissue guards. All edges gilt. The New Testament has a separate title page. Light browning to the leaf edges, some of the engravings are water stained and browned in the margin, tissue guards lightly spotted. Publishers black goatskin refurbished (1996), decorated in gilt and blind, sometime rebacked, the spine with five narrow raised bands, the compartments with floral designs in gilt, new light brown title label. Published by William Collins, Sons, and Company, Limited, Glasgow and London. Undated, but c. 1880. Very good condition for a book of this age, occasional foxing and mild tanning. There is red tape at both ends of the book between boards and book block - possibly a repair but may be part of the original design for a book of well over a thousand pages. Tail of spine bumped and worn, wear to corners and parts of edges. All edges gilt. Both decorative brass clasps present. The text is in clean and bright condition, throughout with the illustrated plates well presented though some have foxing. Personal inscription from mother to daughter on blank leaf in front - 1920. Will be dispatched carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box Approx Dimensions: 341mm high x 261mm wide 88mm deep. A very heavy book. Extra photos on request.
