A Practical Exposition of the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark, in the Form of Lects

A Practical Exposition Of The Gospels Of St. Matthew And St. Mark, In The Form Of Lects by John Bird Sumner is a 19th?century devotional exegesis designed as sermon?like lectures for family devotion and pastoral instruction. Part 4 of the larger work, it culminates in the Passion, Resurrection, and Post?Resurrection mission. The lectures offer verse?by?verse exposition of Mark's and Matthew's narratives with moral and pastoral reflections, drawing cross?references to Old and New Testament scriptures and applying them to faith, discipleship, and church life. Central figures include Jesus and the Twelve, alongside Pharisees and various crowds; major episodes cover miracles, teachings, the Transfiguration, the Last Supper, the crucifixion, resurrection, and mission. Through themes of faith, repentance, humility, mercy, readiness for end times, and the tension between worldly power and God's kingdom, the volume seeks to equip readers with biblical understanding, perseverance, and active mission in light of the risen Christ.
