This book draws on the experiences of healthcare CEOs and board members to identify the basics of structuring an effective governing body and helping that body function in the best way possible. The book is composed of short chapters that range from conceptual issues to practical matters such as board structure.

The book also has especially helpful appendices including sample job descriptions, contracts, assesment tools, and a list of resources.

J. Larry Tyler, FACHE, is president of Tyler & Company, an executive search firm headquartered in Atlanta, with offices in Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Charlotte. Mr. Tyler primarily conducts CEO searches for hospitals across the United States. He began his career in executive search in 1978 and has conducted over 125 CEO searches. In he was cited by his peers as one of the top search consultants in the United States in The New Career Makers by John Sibbald.

Errol L. Biggs, Ph.D., FACHE, is director, Center for Health Administration, and director, Programs in Health Administration, University of Colorado. Dr. Biggs’ primary research and consulting activities include working with hospitals and medical group practices to improve governance of those organizations. He teaches governance in the graduate "on-campus" program and the Executive Program in Health Administration at the University of Colorado. Dr. Biggs has been involved in both the investor-owned and nonprofit hospital industry, having been the CEO for 12 years of large teaching hospitals.
