Item description from seller

Fifth edition of this beautifully produced but practical guide to colour in painting, which uses works by old masters such as Titian, Van Dyck and Rubens as a guide. The author, John Burnet (1784 - 1868) was a Scottish engraver and painter who exhibited with the Royal Academy and was awarded a fellowship with the Royal Society. The intelligence and confidence of his writing reflects more than Burnet's heightened distinction as an artist and a craftsman. Much inspired by the lectures of Joshua Reynolds, a philosophy of colour comes into existence through Burnet's comparative appraisal of these works. Quarto, bound in the original cloth-backed boards, paper titling label on front board, eight hand-coloured engraved plates, a very good copy.
