A very scarce work by Peter Nicholson on masonry, bricklaying and plastering. A very scarce edition. Last seen at auction in 1981. Rebound in handsome half morocco on marbled boards, with new endpapers. The original blanks are included. With sixty engraved plates, four of which are folding. Collated complete. One of Peter Nicholson's popular construction guides, this one detailing masonry, bricklaying and plastering. Containing a new and complete system of lines for stone-cutting, alongside the theory and practice of constructing arches, domes, stairs, tunnels, lighthouses, furnaces and more. Nicholson was a Scottish architect, mathematician and engineer, best known for his theoretical work on the skew arch and his invention of notable draughtsman's instruments. Rebound in half morocco with new endpapers. Externally, very smart with light marks to the boards. Internally, binding slightly strained but still firm. The title page is loosening at the top, but remains attached. Pages age-toned but generally bright and clean. Handling marks and scattered spotting throughout. Repaired tear across the entire centre of the title page and page iv. Staining and age-toning to the plates throughout. Spotting to the plates. Page 1 and the Binders directions opposite it are both darkened with heavy handling marks. Pencil annotations to page 1. Light offsetting to page 158. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 847G12
