Practical Perspective: the Course of Lectures on Linear Perspective

Practical Perspective: The Course Of Lectures On Linear Perspective by R. Burchett. This nineteenth-century guide presents a practical approach to the science of perspective for artists and teachers. Originally published in 1858 as a course of lectures at the Central Training School, the volume argues that perspective expresses appearances governed by optical laws and that geometry provides its facts. Burchett stresses a condensed, oral presentation, to be learned through understanding both text and figures, and emphasizes mastering fundamental principles before proceeding. The book covers how to place the eye, measure distances, and use vanishing points, distance points, and vanishing planes to draw objects such as rooms, doors, windows, furniture, arches, and stairways in correct perspective. Richly illustrated by plates and diagrams, it guides the reader in constructing accurate spatial representations on a picture plane, and in transferring real dimensions into perspective. The work remains a foundational manual for those studying linear perspective and its practical applications in drawing.
