Practical Sermons on the Ten Commandments

Practical Sermons On The Ten Commandments by John Graham. The work collects sermons delivered to a parish audience in York, expounding the moral law of God and its relation to faith in Christ. Graham argues that the Ten Commandments are a complete summary of duty to God and neighbor, and that their observance is not abolished but refined by grace: true holiness proceeds from faith and a living union with Christ, and the law serves as a guide for Christian living and a tutor to lead the unconverted to the Saviour. The volume includes prefatory reflections on the law’s institution, extent, and application, followed by sermons on the First through the Tenth Commandments. Topics cover idolatry, worship, reverence for God’s name, Sabbath-keeping, family duties, marriage, masters and servants, ministers and people, and the sanctity of speech and action. The Preface explains the twofold aim: to present the law apart from costly theological systems, and to show that justification by faith does not nullify holy living. The tone is earnest, doctrinal, and practical, urging repentance, faith, and social virtue.
