A Practical View Of The Present State Of Slavery In The West Indies: Or An Examination Of Mr. Stephen's Slavery Of The British West India Colonies (1826)

""A Practical View of the Present State of Slavery in the West Indies"" is a book written by Alexander Barclay in 1826. The book provides an examination of the slavery system in the British West India Colonies, specifically in response to the work of James Stephen, a British abolitionist who had written a book on the same subject. Barclay, who had lived in the West Indies for several years, provides a practical view of the conditions and treatment of slaves in the colonies. He argues that while there are certainly abuses and injustices in the system, Stephen's portrayal of the situation is exaggerated and does not accurately reflect the reality on the ground. Barclay's book is an important contribution to the debate on slavery and abolition in the 19th century, and provides valuable insights into the conditions of the enslaved population in the West Indies at that time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
