1847. Fifth edition. 192pp. Feargus Edward O'Connor (1796-1855) was an Irish Chartist leader, MP and advocate of the Land Plan, which sought to provide smallholdings for the labouring classes. He declared that Great Britain could support its own population if its lands were properly cultivated, and in his book A Practical Work on the Management of Small Farms he sets forth his plan of resettling surplus factory workers on smallholdings of two, three and four acres. The work addresses various aspects of agricultural management, including the importance of land valuation, the cultivation of waste lands, and the benefits of small farm systems. O'connor emphasizes the significance of providing fair wages and proper working conditions for laborers, contrasting the life of a free laborer with that of a hired worker. He also advocates for the establishment of a system that empowers laborers to work for themselves, promoting independence and self-sufficiency. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The corners and spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and the rear free endpaper has been removed. There is no inscription.…
