In Praise of Jamaica

In Praise of Jamaica celebrates the achievements of the people of Jamaican ancestry--at home and in the diaspora--who by their deeds have helped to transform the island from a dependent colonial society to a fully independent nation.

For would-be travelers and tourists, the book also provides more than a glimpse of the island's outstanding beauty and rich natural heritage. Section II: The Wonders of Jamaica, introduces readers to the spectacular heritage of the country with images of its pristine white sand beaches and promontories, misty Blue Mountains, tumbling waterfalls, spring-fed lagoons, lush river valleys and rugged rainforests.

Jamaica has produced many heroes in history and In Praise of Jamaica recognizes these icons of courage. The book celebrates the island's many successes especially on the world stage--in music, sports, the arts, entertainment as well as in science, education and politics -- while also showcasing a rich and vibrant culture at home.

George Meikle is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a degree in Psychology (BA) and a degree in Business Administration (MBA). With his academic background in social psychology, he has developed a natural interest in the inherited current values which motivate personal as well as cultural attitudes and behavior in Jamaica.

On returning to Jamaica, it took a few years to refocus on what it meant to be Jamaican and as a marketer, to research what differentiates this small practicing democracy from others of a similar background. What is unique about Jamaica and why? Who are our heroes and what are their achievements locally and internationally? What motivates their desire to excel against all odds? According to Joel Osteen, "we are reaping from the deeds that others have sown," if true, Jamaica is a prime example of this paradoxical statement. In Praise of Jamaica is one person s attempt to take a comprehensive look at the key socio-anthropological factors which have impacted the national consciousness of Jamaicans and their accomplishments, or indeed their failures. This treatise should be a source of inspiration to Jamaicans both locally and in the Jamaican Diaspora who have overcome or are still struggling to overcome.
