Covering the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in the broadest sense, from its foundation in 1848 to the second generation (including Burne-Jones and Crane), it also includes the works of a group of English artists known as the Etruscans, who were followers of the Italian painter Giovanni Costa.

Ruskin, whose awareness of Italy was both imaginative and visceral and who made numerous trips to Italy throughout his life, emerges as a key influence on the relationship of the Pre-Raphaelite painters to Italian culture. About the Author

Colin Harrison is Curator of British Paintings and Drawings and Curator of the Pissarro Family Archive at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. His previous publications include Turner's Oxford (2000), Samuel Palmer 1805-1881: Vision and Landscape (2005, joint author) and the Complete Illustrated Catalogue of Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum (2004, joint editor and author). Christopher Newall is a writer and art historian specialising in 19th-century British art who has curated numerous exhibitions of Pre-Raphaelite painting worldwide.
