The Preceptor: Containing a General Course of Education Ed. by R. Dodsley

The Preceptor: Containing A General Course Of Education Ed. By R. Dodsley is an eighteenth?century educational treatise that surveys the foundations of moral philosophy, logic, and political economy as a cohesive program for forming character and public virtue. The work presents morality as the science and art of human duty and happiness, grounded in natural philosophy and the observation of human nature. It outlines a method that derives moral conclusions from observed dispositions and human constitution, dividing the mind into memory, imagination, and reason, and arguing that conscience and reason should govern passions. It discusses classifications of passions—defensive, private, and social—arguing that virtue consists in keeping them properly ordered for the common good. The text moves through topics of health, obligation, and social development, with practical illustrations of duties in everyday life, and culminates in a theory of virtue rooted in conscience and reason, aimed at individual happiness and social harmony. Additional sections treat logic, knowledge, and the interplay of religion, politics, and commerce as elements of a well?ordered life.
