The Preface is by Samuel Johnson, with an old ink note to the effect at the close of that text (Vol. I, pp. ix-xxxi) and, in Vol. II, pp. 520-530, "The Vision of Theodore, the Hermit of Teneriffe, found in his Cell," which Bishop Percy heard Johnson say that it was the best thing he ever wrote.
