Precis of the Archives of the Cape of Good Hope: Requesten (memorials), 1715-1806 (Vol. II)

Behind every petition lies a life, a struggle, a voice asking to be heard. These pages remember forgotten voices. In Precis of the Archives of the Cape of Good Hope: Requesten (Memorials), 1715-1806 (Vol. II), H.C.V. Leibbrandt gathers a meticulous precis of petitions and memorials preserved in the Cape archives and records. Spanning South Africa 1715-1806, this historical primary source collection draws directly from Dutch East India Company records and later colonial South Africa documents, illuminating how settlers, officials and other inhabitants addressed authority, sought redress and negotiated daily existence. The memorials open an intimate window onto early Cape Town society and the wider 18th century Cape Colony, capturing concerns over land, labour, trade, marriage and status, and offering rare texture to Cape of Good Hope history. For South African genealogy research and Cape Town family history, these carefully abstracted settlers petitions and memorials are a treasure-trove of names, relationships and locations, while remaining an indispensable reference work for historians of law, administration and society at the Cape. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions, this volume has been restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure, it brings a foundational archival guide back into circulation for researchers, lifelong learners and classic-literature collectors alike.
