Most machine shop owners are excellent at making parts. Far fewer have been taught how to build a business that is profitable, scalable, transferable and calm enough to run without constant firefighting. This book closes that gap.
Drawing from decades of experience in the business, Paul Van Metre shows shop owners how to turn technical excellence into business excellence.
Inside, you’ll learn how to:
- Build business systems that reduce owner dependence and increase profits
- Strengthen estimating, quoting, job costing, and cash flow
- Create a shop floor where work flows instead of stalls
- Develop a culture where good people stay and improve the business
- Make your company more valuable, whether you ever sell it or not
Whether you’re starting a shop, buying one, trying to grow past the owner-operator stage, preparing for an eventual exit, or simply tired of carrying the whole business on your back, this book gives you a practical roadmap for building a company that can thrive.

About the Author
In 1997, at age 23, he co-founded Pro CNC with a group of friends from Western Washington University, funded by a second mortgage and the naive certainty that being good at machining would translate into knowing how to run a machine shop. It didn't. What followed was a fifteen-year education in the operational realities the trade rarely talks about: near-collapse after 9/11, growing pains that broke systems faster than they could be replaced, cash flow scares that arrived even in busy months, and the slow discovery that most of what determines whether a shop endures has almost nothing to do with the parts it makes.
The systems Paul and his co-founder Kelsey Heikoop built to save Pro CNC eventually became ProShop ERP, a manufacturing platform now used by more than 700 shops across the United States, Canada, and beyond. After selling Pro CNC in 2018, Paul turned his attention to the industry itself. He hosts the Machine Shop Mastery podcast, where he has interviewed dozens of shop owners about what actually works, what quietly kills good businesses, and what the next generation of American manufacturers needs to know.
His writing draws on all of it: his own hard-earned mistakes, the collective wisdom of the shop owners he has spent his career learning from, and the operational disciplines he has watched separate the shops that endure from the ones that quietly disappear.
