The Brontes are a literary phenomenon. The novels, poetry and prose of Emily, Charlotte, Anne and Branwell have made a lasting contribution to English literature. Their brief lives, marred by illness, violence, and early death, have added to their fascination. Felicia Gordon's account provides an excellent introduction to the life and works of the Brontes by examining in detail their bleak and isolated childhood and its effect on their writing, setting the Brontes' work clearly in the context of their times. This sympathetic account of the harsh lives the Brontes provides a fascinating and enlightening introduction to those wanting to read their works.
