Ce travail de revision a dû commencer très tôt, bien avant l'unique représentation de 1667. En novembre 1664, quand la comédie fut jouée au Raincy, chez le prince de Condé, elle était, au dire de La Grange, parfaite, entière et achevée en cinq actes Or, onze mois plus tard, en octobre 1665, M. Le Duc faisait demander à Molière si le quatrième acte de T ariuffe était fait D'où Rigal conclut avec raison qu' il devait s'agir d'un remanie ment d'une partie capitale de l'oeuvre (l).
