Prentice Songs

An apprentice voice learning its music in a changing age. These are songs of becoming. Gathered in this classic poetry collection, George M. P. Baird's Prentice Songs is a lyrical verse anthology of introspective lyric poems that trace the hesitations, hopes and quiet ardours of youth. Emerging at the dawn of the twentieth century, these early 20th century poems turn towards reflective meditative poetry on ordinary experience, shaping brief poems about life and love, time and memory, in language that still feels fresh. As the title hints, this apprentice verse collection reveals a poet testing forms and tones, moving between tenderness and restraint, intimacy and reserve, in ways that speak both to students of literature and to anyone who has wrestled with feeling and thought. Firmly rooted in the traditions of its day yet attentive to the emerging currents of literary modernity, Prentice Songs stands as a quiet document of its moment and a public domain poetry book with lasting resonance. For fans of classic poets and for literary modern poetry readers seeking a more intimate voice, it offers a nuanced bridge between eras. A thoughtful gift for poetry lovers and a compact companion for poetry for literature students, it rewards slow reading and re-reading. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
