The Present State of the Republick of Letters

The Present State Of The Republick Of Letters presents a December 1730 issue of a London-based scholarly periodical that surveys diplomacy, history, literature, and bibliographic notices across Europe. It organizes a pan-European frame—England, the Continent (Italy, France, Germany, Holland), and the papal scholarly world—into sections that present transcripts, editorial debates, and critical apparatus on ongoing projects. The issue foregrounds diplomatic correspondence, including Sir Thomas Roe’s letters touching on the English Civil War era, parliamentary distrust, and mediated settlement, alongside royalist–republican tensions surrounding Elizabeth of Bohemia. It also probes papal historiography and ecclesiastical state power through a projected history of the papacy; treats state of learning and bibliography through reports on Italian historians, new editions, and scholarly collections; and tracks editorial debates and manuscript sources in critical discourse. Other items offer moral-literary exhortations, travel writing, and publishing notices, reflecting a pan-European, bibliographic culture that valorizes archival method, rational religion, and the dissemination of knowledge to learned readers across Europe.
