A Presentation Of Causes Tending To Fix The Position Of The Future Great City Of The World In The Central Plain Of North America: Showing That The Centre Of The World's Commerce, Now Represented By The City Of London, Is Moving Westward To The City Of New York, And Thence Within One Hundred Years, To The Best Position On The Great Lakes. This book argues that the interior plain of North America will host the world's future metropolis and that the center of commerce is moving west from London to New York and eventually to a lake-sited city near the Great Lakes. The author lays out a theory of city growth, comparing London, Paris, New York, Chicago, and Toledo, and detailing the climatic, geographic, and transportation factors that will shape the location of the ultimate great city. He predicts the ultimate resting place of the world’s commercial power will be in the North American interior, with Toledo or Chicago as likely nuclei for the final central city, and discusses how railways, waterways, coal, and climate influence urban development.
