Historic preservation groups will find much of value in this book on restoring, reconstructing, and preserving porches. Compared to the rest of a house, porches suffer most from the ravages of weather; however, they can also be more easily added or remodeled to alter a building's appearance, enclosed to add a room, or even torn away--all with relatively little effort. When seeking to accurately restore an older house, the authors advise that it is necessary first to determine the design, placement, and accoutrements of the original porch. Proper choice of modern ma terials, informed construction, and knowledge of weathering points, they add, are among the tricks of the trade that can prolong a porch's life and reduce upkeep. The "how to" of all this is well covered. Recommended.
