A Primer on Mental Disorders: A Guide for Educators, Families, and Students

From four practicing physicians comes this down-to-earth, easy to understand introduction to mental disorders-essentially a "what is it" book to help identify disorders, understand the ramifications, and assist teachers and families in providing a supportive environment for anyone who suffers from mental disorders. Arranged by broad category (following the DSM-IV-TR, the standard reference for medical professionals), disorders and their treatments are described, along with a list of helpful resources for the classroom, library, and home. Appendixes list important advocacy and support groups, appropriate videos for classroom viewing, and Web sites for further information. This useful tool makes a difficult subject readily accessible to students, teachers, and the general public. A Primer on Mental Disorders belongs in every school and public library and institutions of higher learning, as well as the offices of school counselors and administrators.

The authors are all mainstream doctors, educated at top medical institutions: Thomas E. Allen, M.D. (Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons); Mayer C. Liebman, M.D. (New York University School of Medicine); Lee Crandall Park, M.D. (www.leecrandallparkmd.net) (Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine) and William C. Wimmer, M.D. (University of Maryland School of Medicine).
