The Principles of Christian Religion Explained to the Capacity of the Meanest

The Principles Of Christian Religion Explained To The Capacity Of The Meanest by Thomas Gouge. This is a comprehensive catechetical manual that presents Christian doctrine and practice in a plain, accessible style for those of little education. Gouge’s treatise unfolds the nature of the true God, the Trinity, and the attributes, then moves through Creation, Providence, and the Fall, showing humanity’s need of redemption through Jesus Christ. It lays out the offices of Christ—Prophet, Priest, and King—and explains justification, adoption, and sanctification, together with the means by which grace is applied: faith, repentance, and obedience. The work contains extensive instruction on how parents and masters should educate their children and servants, including catechesis, prayer, Bible reading, and family worship. It covers the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and the two sacraments—Baptism and the Lord’s Supper—ending with exhortations toward repentance and faith in Christ and the hope of eternal life for believers.
