The Principles Of English Grammar: Comprisng The Substance Of The Most Approved English Grammars Extant, With Copious Exercises In Parsing And Syntax; A New Ed., Rev., Re-Arranged And Improved by Peter Bullions presents a comprehensive 19th?century school grammar that condenses and adapts the leading English grammars of the era for use in schools. The volume covers Orthography, Etymology, Syntax, and Prosody, and provides abundant exercises on parsing, noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, interjection, and conjunction usage, as well as promiscuous exercises on parsing and integrated analyses. It includes prefatory material detailing the editor’s design, revisions in the revised edition, and a substantial Appendix explaining the law of language and the rules of composition. Bullions emphasizes utility, clarity, and consistency, arguing that grammar should reflect best usage and support initial study and comparative grammar with Latin and Greek. The work served as an influential educational resource in its era and remains a notable artifact of 19th?century American pedagogy.
