The Principles Of Free Trade: Illustrated In A Series Of Short And Familiar Essays ; Originally Published In The Banner Of The Constitution by Condy Raguet presents a 1830s polemical collection arguing for free trade and against the United States’ protective tariff policy, known as the American System. Comprising long, data?driven essays written primarily in the early 1830s and published through the 1830s, the work combines economic analysis, moral framing, and public policy advocacy. It surveys tariff design, revenue, and the impacts of protective duties on prices, labor, and national prosperity, often using hypothetical calculations and sectoral examples (cotton, wool, iron, sugar, carpets) to demonstrate that protection elevates costs for consumers and mainly benefits a narrow few. The book frames trade as interdependent, emphasizes international and domestic competition, and places a strong emphasis on educating a broad audience—including workers, farmers, merchants, and reformers—to support free trade. The Appendix collects documentary material such as convention minutes, delegate lists, and export/import tables to bolster its arguments.
