Ernest Nagel's copy, with his extensive, often questioning, annotations in pencil and his name to the front free endpaper. Nagel (1901-1985) was a highly influential figure in the logical positivist movement, and arguably the leading American philosopher of science for three decades from the 1930s to the 1960s. He authored The Structure of Science (1961) - widely considered a classic philosophy of science text - and taught philosophy at Columbia University, where he later held the position of University Professor. In 1977, Nagel was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Preliminaries with marginal tears and tape repairs, loose final page, a few tears, in the original cloth, spine gilt; spine ends and corners worn and rubbed; otherwise sound and holding together firmly.
