Software development is about much more than writing code. Successful software engineers must understand how to transform ideas and requirements into reliable, maintainable, secure, and scalable software systems.
Principles of Software Engineering provides a practical, accessible introduction to the concepts, practices, and professional skills that modern software developers need. Written for students, aspiring developers, and working technology professionals, this book goes beyond programming syntax to explore the complete software development lifecycle-from understanding requirements and designing systems to testing, deployment, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
Readers will learn how professional development teams approach software projects and how sound engineering principles help organizations build better software. Topics include software development processes, requirements engineering, software design and modeling, object-oriented design, SOLID principles, design patterns, software architecture, source control, collaborative development, maintainable code, testing and quality assurance, security, DevOps, continuous delivery, cloud-native development, distributed systems, and software maintenance.
The book also explores one of the most significant changes occurring in the profession today: AI-assisted software engineering. Readers will examine how artificial intelligence is changing the way developers write, review, test, document, and maintain software while learning why fundamental software engineering knowledge remains essential in an AI-enabled development environment.
Key topics include:
- Software development processes and methodologies
- Requirements engineering
- Principles of good software design and modeling
- Object-oriented design and SOLID principles
- Common software design patterns
- Software architecture
- Git, source control, and collaborative development
- Writing clean and maintainable software
- Software testing and quality assurance
- Secure software engineering
- DevOps and continuous delivery
- Software maintenance and evolution
- Cloud-native and distributed software development
- AI-assisted software engineering
- Software engineering careers and professional practices
Rather than focusing on a single programming language, Principles of Software Engineering emphasizes concepts that apply across languages, platforms, and technology stacks. This makes it an excellent companion for readers who already know some programming and are ready to understand how professional software is actually designed and developed.
Whether you are preparing for your first software development position, expanding your programming knowledge into software engineering, studying computer science or information technology, or updating your skills for today's AI-assisted development environment, Principles of Software Engineering provides a practical foundation for becoming a more capable and effective software professional.
Move beyond simply writing code-and start thinking like a software engineer.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
