About this Item

One of the most popular of 20th century Western writers is this Nebraskan biographer and novelist; "Old Jules," her 1935 biography of her father, put her on the literary map with its controversial depiction of a brutal, gritty Old West; other popular nonfiction titles include "Crazy Horse" (1942), "Cheyenne Autumn" (1953), "The Buffalo Hunters" (1954) and "Son of the Gamblin' Man" (1960) as well as novels and essay collections. Printed Map Signed, 1p, 8¼" X 5½, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Printed map titled "Sketch Map for Old Jules 1884-1928," a rather crude reproduction of a hand-drawn map of the area covered in her 1935 book and presumably removed from a copy of said book. Covers that portion of Nebraska which appears in the book, noting features such as "Sandoz Orchard," the direction to Wounded Knee and to Big Horns, etc. Vertically along the blank left edge, she boldly signs and inscribes in brown ink "For Arnold F. Gates / Sincerely / Mari Sandoz." Most unusual and attractive. Bookseller Inventory # 41032
