M13139Graaf Carl Friedrich von Wartensleben bewoonde Borg Welgelegen in Sappemeer. Hij was getrouwd met Wendelina Cornera Alberda van Menkema. Dit echtpaar gaf opdracht tot de verbouw van de borg in grotendeels haar huidige vorm. De graaf woonde niet lang op Welgelegen. Carl, die een belangrijke rol speelde in de Oostenrijkse Successieoorlog van 1740 tot 1748, bracht een groot deel hiervan door als Kamerheer van keizerin Maria Theresia van Oostenrijk. Toen Wendelina overleed vererfde de borg op haar broer, Unico Allard, die deze in 1747 verkocht.
