First edition of Caleb Stowe's revision of John Smith's edition of 1755. Octavo, [4], 369, [1] pp. Contemporary sheep, rebacked to style at a very early date and with a newer burgundy morocco gilt spine label. Early owner's presentation on the front blank reading "J. H. Sadler from Edw. Thomas, Christmas, 1904." Some rubbing and corners with wear but a very good, clean and complete copy.In actuality this volume contains two parts, The first part contains the history and practice of printing and the second part bears the famous type specimen of Edmund Fry and Co. It is continuously paginated but the second part has a separate title page that reads " Specimen of Printing Types . by Edmund Fry and Co. Letter Founders to the Prince of Wales." It too is dated 1787 and consists of pp. 273-318. Following the type specimen is and an appendix titled "Practical Directions to Pressmen.".
