FIRST THUS. 8vo. Original black cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt. Bruising and wear to extremities, some scuffing and soiling. Endpapers tanned, toned, occasional grubby fingerprints, closed tear to leading edge of pp. 39/40, spine cracked at two gatherings, but binding holding firm. Else, clean. Good+ A robust copy of the privately printed 1908 edition of Symonds' essay, which famously first appeared (in English) as an appendix in Sexual Inversion (1897), authored and arranged by Havelock Ellis; following the suppression and banning of Sexual Inversion, this 1908 stand alone edition of Symonds' essay features a fictitious society and printing location ("Hollana") "intended to deflect the risk of prosecution" (Butler, 2019). A earlier single volume of Symonds' essay had appeared in 1901 with the same title, A Problem in Greek Ethics, Being an Inquiry into the Phenomenon of Sexual Inversion, Addressed Especially to Medical Psychologists and Jurists, and featuring Symonds as author, but with the imprint "London 1901," while the publisher and printer went unnamed (Butler, 2019).
