I Was the Problem Because You Needed One: Being the Black Sheep and Breaking the Cycle

Some kids are raised. Others are trained to fail.

In I Was the Problem Because You Needed One, Charles B. F. Brooks shares the unvarnished reality of being cast as the family scapegoat-the "black sheep" blamed for everything, measured against everyone, and loved only when he performed.

From abandonment and silence to a home that felt more like confinement than care, Brooks shows what happens when pain is ignored instead of healed. Shame hardens into anger. Anger turns inward. And the label of "problem" starts to feel like a life sentence.

But this is not only a story of what was done to him-it's the story of what changed. When he finally asked for help, therapy gave language to what he'd been living through and revealed a truth he'd never been allowed to hold: he wasn't born broken-he was wounded. With that truth came boundaries, clarity, and the hardest choice of all: to stop carrying what was never his to carry.

If you've ever been blamed for family dysfunction, this book will feel painfully familiar-and powerfully freeing. And if you're trying to break generational patterns before they reach your children, it may be the wake-up call you've been waiting for.
