Problems of Mysticism and Its Symbolism (Paperback or Softback)

A foundational study at the intersection of psychoanalysis, symbolism, and Western esoteric tradition.

In Problems of Mysticism and Its Symbolism by Herbert Silberer, the author undertakes a rigorous examination of the symbolic structures underlying mystical and alchemical texts, interpreting them through the emerging framework of early psychoanalytic theory.

Drawing on sources from alchemy, Rosicrucianism, and broader mystical literature, Silberer argues that the often obscure and paradoxical imagery found in these traditions can be understood as expressions of inner psychological processes. Central to his approach is the concept of "functional phenomena," through which mental states are mirrored in symbolic forms, allowing for a systematic interpretation of visionary and esoteric material.

Engaging with the intellectual currents of his time-including the influence of Sigmund Freud-Silberer explores the relationship between unconscious processes, dream symbolism, and the language of mysticism. His work seeks not to dismiss esoteric traditions, but to reinterpret them as meaningful representations of psychic transformation and introspective experience.

Scholarly and interdisciplinary, Problems of Mysticism and Its Symbolism remains a significant contribution to the study of symbolism, depth psychology, and the psychological dimensions of religious and mystical thought.
