There are many textbooks available that are designed to meet the prescribed syllabi of specific universities. However, books that present the subject in a broad, challenging, and thought-provoking manner, encouraging students to develop analytical and problem-solving skills, are comparatively few. In this book, I have adopted a problem-based approach, with selected solutions drawn from my teaching and professional experience in India and influenced by my academic training in California, USA, where independent thinking and conceptual understanding are emphasized over rote memorization. For many students, particularly in developing countries, the transition from examination-oriented learning to solving practical engineering problems can be challenging. Consequently, employers often seek graduates who demonstrate strong analytical abilities, creativity, and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar technical situations.Developing indigenous technologies in areas such as aerospace, advanced manufacturing, energy systems, and computing requires engineers who can innovate rather than simply reproduce existing knowledge. Achieving this goal depends not only on modern curricula but also on educational methods that encourage inquiry, experimentation, and critical thinking. It is hoped that this book will contribute, in some measure, to that objective by helping students strengthen their understanding of engineering fundamentals through the systematic solution of practical problems.
