Proboscidea, Vol. 1: A Monograph of the Discovery, Evolution, Migration and Extinction of the Mastodonts and Elephants of the World; Moeritherioidea, Deinotherioidea, Mastodontoidea (Classic Reprint)

Explore the origins and journeys of the Proboscidea—past giants that shaped Earth’s mammal history.

This volume surveys the discovery, evolution, migration, and extinction of mastodonts and elephants worldwide, offering a clear, accessible account of how these long-lived animals began in Africa and spread across continents. It presents a phylogenetic framework that replaces older Linnaean categories with evolutionary lines, revealing a dynamic picture of how mastodonts and elephants diversified, migrated, and adapted over millions of years.

• Learn how the Proboscidea originated and spread, with emphasis on Africa as the origin point.
• See how a new evolutionary classification reshapes understanding of species, genera, and families.
• Understand the multiple lines of ascent that led to the mastodonts, deinotheres, and elephant families.
• Discover how fossil evidence from around the world informs paleontologists about migration and extinction patterns.
