A detailed look at the 1888 laying of Boston’s new Public Library corner-stone, with speeches, prayers, and a celebrated poem.
This historical volume documents the ceremony held on November 28, 1888, when the corner-stone for the city’s new Public Library building was laid. It records who spoke, who offered prayers, and how the event was organized, including the involvement of civic leaders, trustees, and the public. The proceedings mix official addresses with moments of reflection and culture, such as a poem written for the occasion.
The text also presents context about the library’s design, site, and purpose, along with remarks on the building’s safety, light, and air, and the role of the library in Boston’s educational mission. Readers will find notes on the architects, the placement of the building, and the broader history of the library from earlier corner-stone events to the present chapter. The volume includes appendices and historical summaries that place the ceremony within the city’s evolving public education efforts.
- Records of remarks by city officials and trustees during the ceremony.
- Invocation, poem, and selections that reflect the event’s ceremonial mood.
- Architectural rationale and design language guiding the library’s construction.
- Historical context tracing the library’s growth and its role in public education.
Ideal for readers of local history, civic ceremony, and the evolution of Boston’s public institutions.
Appendix and historical notes illuminate the sequence from past corner-stones to the newer monument.

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies.
