Proceedings of the Oxford Society for Promoting the Study of Gothic Architecture

Proceedings Of The Oxford Society for Promoting the Study of Gothic ArchitectureA detailed archival record of the Oxford Society for Promoting the Study of Gothic Architecture, documenting inventories of architectural drawings and rubbings, lists of publications, and minutes from meetings in the mid-1840s. It covers Drawings and rubbings by collectors Rickman, Bickman, Grey; thematic catalogs of Decorated and Perpendicular Gothic elements; individual collectors' drawings; guides and monographs on architectural antiquities near Oxford; engravings and plates; and the society's governance, new members, rule changes, and fundraising activities. The work emphasizes preservation and study of medieval architecture, restoration ethics, and international outreach, including correspondence about church designs in Newfoundland and Madras. It provides a substantial archival record of 19th-century architectural scholarship in England, illustrating how the society catalogued and published evidence, fostered scholarly debate, and supported restoration projects, notably at Dorchester Church. It documents a professional, expanding network of collectors, editors, and architects.
