Proceedings of the Section of Sciences, Vol. 21: 2nd Part, No. 6-10; October, 1919 (Classic Reprint)

This book examines the varied reactions of Chlamydomonas variabilis Dangeard to external stimuli. The author sets out a method for large-scale culturing of the algae, before going on to detail their reactions to light, gravity, and chemical stimuli, which the author found could be dependent on the concentration of electrolytes in the surrounding solution. The author found that Chlamydomonas possesses similar colloidal properties to emulsoid solutions of globulins, and concludes that the motility of the algae observed under the influence of acid and alkaline solutions is dependent on a colloidal-chemical change in the protoplasm. This book is a valuable resource for researchers in biology and chemistry, and for those looking to further their knowledge of the behaviour and composition of living organisms.
