The Process Skills Rating Scales - Revised offers a systematic method for measuring a student's current skill level and future growth in several important areas. The scales rate a child's processing skills related to thinking, reasoning, and searching for knowledge independently, and to communicating and interacting effectively. The scales provide educators with a snap-shot of a child's skill level in the following skill areas: verbal communication, scientific research skills, independent study, written communication, nonverbal communication, critical thinking, creative thinking, research, and technology. The primary purpose of the rating scales is to help educators define a child's current level of skill in these areas and to monitor the child's progress in these areas. Also, the scales help identify student strengths, and point out areas that may need improvement. The scales are not standardized or normed, they are designed only to be used as an information-gathering tool for monitoring student progress in relation to processing skills. All Levels

About the Author:

Frances A. Karnes is professor of curriculum, instruction, and special education at The University of Southern Mississippi. She is widely known for her teaching, research, publications, innovative program developments, and service activities in gifted education and leadership training.

Dr. Suzanne M. Bean is Director of the Roger F. Wicker Center for Creative Learning and Professor of Education at Mississippi University for Women (MUW). For the past 27 years she has served in the field of gifted studies as a teacher of gifted students, director of the Mississippi Governor’s School, founder and director of various other programs for gifted students and their teachers and parents. She has co-authored a textbook for teachers of gifted students, Methods and Materials for Teaching the Gifted. She serves on the Editorial Review Board for Gifted Child Quarterly and the Journal for Secondary Gifted Education.
