The Professor

Vintage Penguin. #482. Rex Warner’s The Professor is a darkly comic, unsettling novel about an academic whose life unravels as he becomes entangled in political intrigue and personal obsession. Warner charts the professor’s gradual slide from scholarly respectability into paranoia and moral confusion, using the story to explore the fragility of reason and the seductive pull of power. The tone shifts between satire and psychological tension, giving the narrative a sharp, disquieting edge. It’s a distinctive mid-century work that showcases Warner’s interest in authority, ideology and the instability of the modern mind.
